Bhutan - change comes to the Himalayan "Happy Kingdom" | DW Documentary

Bhutan's other name is "The Happy Kingdom." The small Himalayan country has one foot in the distant past and the other in the digital age. It's quite a balancing act for Bhutan's citizens.
No other country has recently undergone more radical change than Bhutan. The millennium brought television, the internet and democratization to the last Himalayan kingdom almost overnight. The capital Thimphu has become one of South Asia's fastest growing cities. At the same time, just a few kilometers to the north, 20 thousand nomads still live from herding yak on the high plains of the Himalayas. This documentary tells of the challenges these people face.
We meet young Chewang , who often has to leave his family for months and trek to heights above five thousand meters in search of the caterpillar fungus, a fabled medicinal mushroom. We also follows the journey of five-year-old Doryi, who is separated from his poverty-stricken family when they send him to a monastery. Meanwhile, the committed organic farmer Choki is trying to bring the advantages of modern life to her village. And 73-year-old bowman Ap Chimi is finding the modern world quite a challenge, so he's decided to compete in his last archery tournament to show youngsters in the village that he can still hit the bull's eye as easily as they do.
This documentary takes viewers on a trip through a time that mirrors Western development in the last century. The loss of a communal life in harmony with nature is juxtaposed against the gains made through globalization. Director Irja von Bernstorff, who has made her home in the Happy Kingdom, gives us a unique peek behind the country's tourist façade to reveal what makes the wondrous world of Bhutan so special.

I had a privilege to visit Bhutan, almost 4 years ago.. I really can't forget Bhutan, it's my first abroad tour, and Buddhism being one of my favorite 🙏🙏 I loved that I got to see a country that follows Buddhism, it is so peaceful. Every year since then, I wish to visit it again. Wish I had a citizenship there too😆. I had this amazing trek to Tiger's Nest, which is a very famous monastery. Feel so privileged. Thanks for giving an amazing documentary. I haven't even watched it yet.... Still😘

I am amazed by the journey of becoming a monk. Poor families send their son to live and survive and become a monk. A monk that to find peace and become attached with nature and become ultimately a good human being and live truely with joy. My question is if you give birth to a son, why not he enjoy living with natural parent. The tears to both father and son while sleeping for last time and for a long time not be able to see his families, was heavy and touching. I hope the young monk find peace and reunite with his family.

@Dravidian Anu, When it comes to expressing gratitude to anyone or anything, we really don’t need someone like you lecturing us. We are great at it. You, however, could use a little situational awareness. Bhutan was offered and forgoes billions of dollars in potential infrastructure development aid from China to keep India happy and the friendship with India intact and strong. It has refused to agree to settle border issues with China even when China offered very favorable terms. Both sides make great sacrifices to keep this friendship strong. It's not a one-way street with Bhutan getting all the benefits. Also, try and lose the ghetto language when talking about a serious topic. You’re not impressing anyone.

@akoofromtp not praising myself, Dude last year indian armed forces protected and retaken area invade by china, so much money spend by indian government for this, also aid to Bhutan by india is higher than what indian states in North East ,South or Utterpradesh like states get, I have no problem with that but I pay 1.4 US dollar 1L for petrol in that 70% is tax while Bhutanese pay 0.8 US dollar So bitch we deserve some appreciation

Let me first talk about the piece of art. DW has done a spectacular job by capturing the lives of Bhutanese so very emphatically. The entire creation team has poured in it all its acumen and artistry in bringing out a magnetic masterpiece. I am enchanted by their skills. I would earnestly wish if such creations are embedded in the education curriculum to train recipients on the film-making process and to understand HAPPINESS in the truest and the real sense. I am shaken to the core, guys! Secondly, Bhutanese have always been happy and contented people. Even if they are exposed to modern life advancements, they accept things with serenity and composed behavior. They are not carried away by the charms of developed civilizations. THEIR LIFE IS NATURE AND OUR LIFE IS OUT OF NATURE! For holidaying, we run to Bhutan to relish nature which is preserved and nourished by Bhutanese. THE ULTIMATE SAVIOUR FOR THE HUMAN RACE IS NATURE. The closest you are to NATURE the SAFEST you are! Absolutely speechless!
