Germany: The discreet lives of the super rich | DW Documentary

The rich in Germany been never been as well-off as they are today and assets have never been so unevenly distributed. But who are they? How do they live? And what do they think of their country? A journey into the discreet world of the super-rich.
One percent of Germans own over a quarter of the country's assets, whilst half of the country’s citizens have no assets at all. But while the German media report on the growing poverty in the country on a daily basis, little is known about the super-rich. They keep a very low profile and can walk the streets unrecognized. "Manager Magazin” says there were around 200 billionaires living in Germany in 2018, and their numbers are increasing. The documentary "Top of the World" asks why rich Germans are so unwilling to talk about their wealth. Its author immerses himself in the discreet world of big money and meets financial advisors with 800 years of family tradition behind them and billionaires such as drugstore king Dirk Rossmann and mail-order company heir Michael Otto - as well as a self-made businessmen such as Rainer Schaller. They talk about their notions of money and justice, the origins of their wealth and their fear of social envy.

Lol! They think people see them as "scrooge mcduck"??? "I don't like to swim in my money!" Do these people even realize how ridiculous they sound as they gather in castle's and pat themselves on the back about how rich they are???

And here I sit feeling damn grateful that I have a good job with good benefits AND a damn good retirement package, something that's becoming increasingly scarce in the US. These people though? They might as well live in a completely different planet from most of us. I have an older brother who makes around 250k/year as upper management in a large-ish and established tech company, I use to believe he was rich but the true super rich live lives I can't even imagine.

This documentary profiles a theme that is of privilege and once again unattainable to the masses. Great they are reluctant to show their wealth, but this documentary focuses on a theme of humility that negates the real situation at hand...how are they able to accrue wealth and on whose backs (labourers historically) are they benefitting from??

6:46-7:22 This does not surprise me one bit and should not surprise anyone, well it might surprise the poor because only the poor think that wealth is all about money. Wealth comes from connection and resources not money. If wealth came from money humanity would be pretty worthless since money isn't even real (well most of it anyway). It is true that governments print out paper and coins but only do it just enough to keep them in circulation. Most money is generated by banking and credit with many series of transactions completed everyday. Wealthy people are naturally generous but when disconnection and hate comes that is when selfishness occurs. I wanted to understand wealth as I always was treated higher than the other students at my school and so was my family. My family has a long history of military service and other government service as well as environmentalism (which includes farmers as they depend on the environment for products to sell). Over time I learned more and more about wealth and now understand it a great deal. I myself have done and continue to do government work in environmental services and will lead the field. I served on senate while at college which gave me ample leadership abilities as I'm the longest serving and most decorated in the senate history of the campus. One day a sermon was given on the warnings of wealth that it cannot save you from death, no amount of wealth can buy your way out of the grave. It doesn't define you, it cannot make you faster, smarter, or stronger than another person. And unfortunately, you can't take it with you after you go. Is having wealth a bad thing? No but how you use it can be bad. It is important to give portions of wealth and instruct how to use it that way it will be carried on the right way. Otherwise it brings envy, bitterness, jealousy and thinking your better than others. I used to think I was better than others back in the mid and late 2000s (2003-2009) and early 2010s (2010-2014). When I graduated I vowed never again and now 7 years later I've been able to do well thanks to the help I received from people in high school and my college.

I agree with you 100 percent. Just by adding a couple of extra zeros to your name in the banks computer can instantly make you a billionaire. Crazy that people don't realize how incredible this all is. Also, how can any country be in debt when they literally only have to go into a system and adjust numbers. I'm sure it's more to it than that but honestly, maybe not.

I'm the same privacy, but ethics, empathy, respect, LOVE, understanding to all sides, blessing others that have never asked for anything nore would they except a bless and wouldn't understand why they would be deserving of wealth. Financial wealth can create hurt to people who aren't mentally level, or who are selfish and self centered... Those are people who aren't enjoyable to even set in the same room. Business ethics, business with CEOs who came from nothing are more likely to be more understanding to good business practices, a life of hardships is a life of blessings of learning I can say I feel like some days I've been chewed up and stomped on however I can say this the learning has been a blessing and it's helped create self confidence, it's showed me my strengths, and I've learned to understand with education and positivity. HOWEVER LOL I do have days where all this makes me sad a little because I would like to understand why there is so many players that stays hidden because if they knew me they would know of my loyalty, my education, my ability to understand with a positive understand and overview and I'm very analytical this can be view as a negative or positive 😊. It's more positive.. I wish those 2nd party's had the ability to view my ways of thinking and my ethics for all areas in life on all levels. I think I understand what's taking place now, and why I am being isolated.. Just know my family goes with me and I will and can control there behavior and will seek guidance and health care takers to hand there hands ok the handful who really needs there hands held, and I would seek out a communication coach in order to teach them how to shut up unless in the Privacy within one's home, and a physical therapist to make sure there brains release unhealthy hormones. And..lol a food nutritionist with a cook.. they will also be bounded with Privacy contracts and wellness contracts. Man my list goes on for a mile long. God bless

I don’t really care about the rich, as long as their luxurious lifestyles aren’t sponsored by unnecessary and uncontrolled exploitation of other peoples’ hard work and natural resources. I personally detest luxury. For me, modesty is one of those absolutely highest human traits. I always look up to people that genuinely care and work for others (as well as the planet’s non-human living creatures) instead of chasing wealth and power.

mmm neo feudalism what lovely system. I am starting to wonder what is the actual diffrence between marxism(ussr) and capitalism(US system) both concentrate power to a small elite(politicians(marxism), ultra rich families(capitalism)) and destroy economic mobility in the process. I prefer a technocratic/meritocratic system where you got a capitalistic system with 100% inheritence tax with a basic floor wich society decides what it should be. For me the floor should be the bare necessity eg housing, electricity, healthcare, education and cheap food plus water. The willingness to for people to want to imporve their lives will be the motivation for the vast majority of people to work since many people wants a good car, high quality housing, computers, internet, etc. Though I also want a palamentary deomcratic system with a technocratic party alternative lead by engineers and many other types of natrual scince specialists(from physist to technician, from doctor to nurse, etc) would be great. Instead we get professional bullshitters(politicians) and feudal families(ultra rich families). If the rich work harder then I do not understand why they would be afraid of starting from the same starting point as everyone else and get to the top from their own work. I got no problem with people who work themself to the top, but the only thing I am against is wealth from inheritance since they did not work for that it just got handed to them. Argue with me if you disagree.

These people are not rich they just have more money than they will ever need - are they good people? well if they follow the bible they are giving up heaven for wealth - No they are not good people this life is about life and not money. Greed, ignorance, and arrogance have destroyed so much life - having money does not make you rich it makes you lose your connection to what life is all about " life" This planet is being destroyed by the rich because they can and by the poor because they must, by the greedy because they are never satisfied and by those who do nothing because they live their ignorance.

@All Above Else Ambition and work? Ambition and drive to destroy? Being rich isn't the problem per se - the problem is being rich and making others poor - or as the Laozi puts it "taking more and giving less" - We are all in this boot together and some have the wealth and are buying the power to kick you out - And here is a thought to conclude "it is so easy to do good when you are rich. Why are they having such a hard time in doing so?"

Watch the docu: "blood in the mobile" for example. Or take some interest in finding out how and where your clothes are made. Its simple: the rich people have welth that has blood on it. And of course so do almost all people in the west. But the richer you are the more impact you have on the balance in this world. And the more bloody your hands are. I'd wish there would be more moral mindset in this world. But I think is naïeve. Rich people mostly don't care to much about well being of others: for else they would be far less rich.....

Just imagine what would happen if wealth was equally distributed? Everybody had let's say 10 million dollars. That 10 million would have 0 value, simply because everyone has it. Everybody can't be rich at the same time. Most of the population has to be poor, to make such billionaires "who want to live a simple life" lol.

"That's not how things work in Germany?" Really? Tax laws are in favor of the rich in every country. Even when on paper the taxes are the same for everybody, creative accountants and lawyers can show you how to write off stuff. And then, they can always go to tax havens. The person can live in Germany, but the business be registered on the Caimans.
